The Perfect Plant Combo for Front Door Planters
I have a confession… I am quickly becoming obsessed with gardening, planting, landscaping - pretty much anything to do with making our outdoor space great. Our new house has a big yard that needs a LOT of work. Like, new grass and everything! To combat the overwhelming amount of labor needed on the actual yard, I planted a front door planter to bring greenery and flowers into our lives.
As a beginner gardener, I leaned on the advice of my parents who both have fabulous gardens and yards. For reference, we are in zone 5b and 6a. Our front door area is partially shaded and gets afternoon sun. Annuals are great for planters and I recommend buying them in early-spring. Don’t worry about buying the larger plant - the small itty-bitty ones are cheaper and will grow quickly. I’ve had mine for less than a month and they’ve double in size.

Planter Formula = Thriller + Filler + Spiller
Thriller = Coleus
This is the perfect star of the planter. It grows nice and tall, creating a wonderful backdrop, and comes in many bright vibrant colors. I love the deep red of mine! Avoid windy locations since coleus are prone to breakage, fertilize regularly, and water about once per day.
Filler = Impatiens
I love they way these flowers have filled out my planter. The white flowers are so dainty and pretty, but they also can come in pink, red, orange and purple. Make sure the planter has proper drainage and stays out of the hot sun.
Spiller = Fuchsia
To say I’m obsessed with this neon flower is an understatement. It’s so bright and colorful! It’s best to keep fuchsia moist, watered regularly and in partial shade.
I’m considering adding another planter in a different height to layer with this one. I have one that I’ve used previously on my front porch in LA that could be perfect. It has a smaller diameter and is slightly taller. I’d then layer a lantern or decorative object in front to create a three-object vignette (when in doubt, decorate in groupings of three).
