Hi!

Welcome to DIY Darling! I'm a twenty-something figuring out how to design my dream life on a dime. Let's take this journey together!

DIY Custom Pennant Flag

DIY Custom Pennant Flag

I absolutely love being an Aunt - it’s one of my favorite titles in the world. Currently, I only have nieces and lucky for me, all my niece’s parents seem to be enthusiastic about my DIY-gifts. So when the idea popped into my head to make a Custom Pennant Flag, I knew all three girls needed one featuring their first and middle names.

My inspiration for this DIY came from these two adorable pennant flags I found online (sadly, I have no idea who the original creator is - please comment below if you do so I can tag appropriately!)

Inspiration:

Materials:

  • duck canvas fabric

  • felt

  • 1” wide ribbon

  • Xacto knife

  • fabric scissors

  • hot glue

  • sewing machine

Step 1:

using Canva app to type out text

Using Canva, I designed the lettering for the first and middle names. I played around with the sizing and went with the following:

First name = Carlsons Script at 237 size font

Middle name = Yearbook Solid at 142 size font

Step 2:

hands cutting out paper letter with exacto knife

I made my own lettering stencil by printing out the Canva design and tracing each lettering with an exacto knife. This was quite tedious but the end result was great! An alternative would be to use a Cricut machine; however, I don’t have one currently so I had to get creative.

Step 3:

tracing stencil onto felt with pencil
Cutting out felt letters with fabric scissors

Trace the stencil onto felt and cut out with fabric scissors. Take your time (and this will take time).

Step 4:

using an angle finder on fabric
tracing outline on fabric using level

Roughly layout the letters onto the duck canvas fabric to get a sense of sizing. Using an angle finder and a level, trace out the triangle shape, making sure to add a few inches to ensure that, after hemming, the size of the triangle pennant flag will properly fit the letters. Measure twice, cut once!

Step 5:

sewing sides of custom pennant flag using Singer sewing machine

Hem, pin, and sew all sides of the triangle. I found a highly informative tutorial on how to finish outside corners for triangle shapes, which is linked here. It was fun to learn a new sewing skill and it worked out great, giving me crisp and pointed corners for the pennant flag.

Step 6:

hot glue on pennant flag
hot gluing ribbon onto pennant flag

Time to put the pieces all together! Using hot glue, add the 1” ribbons first. Then add the felt letters and additional design features. I was in the zone so I didn’t get any further photos of this process, but I found that it was easiest to lay out the letters and gently lift each corner, add a dab of glue, and press firmly onto the duck canvas fabric.

The finished product…

And there you have it! DIY Custom Pennant Flags from start to finish. I played around with different border styles and I like the variety, especially since Indigo and Lila share a room - the set looks really pretty together.

I love the vintage feel of Gemma’s flag. I picked the colors based on each girls’ current room decor. You can use any combination of duck cloth fabric and felt - just be sure there is some kind of contrast.

Could my nieces be any cuter?? I love how excited and interested they were, and they look awesome in their respective rooms.

Would you ever give this project a try? Feel free to send me a message if you’d like me to make one for you.
